ottawa, canada - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that the US may apply additional customs duties despite the halt of the 25% duty in Canada for at least 30 days.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's Statement
During a meeting with mayors at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) in Ottawa, Trudeau emphasized the importance of increasing resources to prevent drug trafficking and eradicating Fentanyl.
Although US President Trump announced the suspension of the 25% additional customs duty on Canada for at least 30 days, Trudeau expressed concerns that efforts may not guarantee the elimination of tariff issues.
Trudeau also stated, 'We are not out of danger yet'.
In response to Trump's decision on additional tariffs, Trudeau announced that Canada would impose a 25% customs duty on $155 billion worth of imports from the US, with tariffs taking effect on $30 billion worth of goods from February 4 and within 21 days for $125 billion worth of imports.
Furthermore, Trudeau revealed new commitments to appoint a 'Fentanyl Czar', list cartels as terrorists, provide 24/7 surveillance at the border, and launch the 'Canada-US Joint Action Task Force' to combat organized crime, Fentanyl, and money laundering.
