Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly considering announcing his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party in the near future, amidst dwindling popularity. According to The Globe and Mail, Trudeau's popularity rating has hit an all-time low, leading him to contemplate his next steps.
Ottawa has been embroiled in political turmoil for weeks. The 53-year-old premier had to deal with the resignation of his once loyal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland at the end of 2024.
The challenges facing Canadians revolve around inflation and a sluggish economy. Trudeau recently promised to make 'life more affordable' and focus on 'creating more jobs for the middle class.' However, his ability to deliver on these promises with a minority in parliament remains uncertain.
Rising housing prices are also a pressing issue for Trudeau, who has been Prime Minister of Canada for almost a decade. Reports indicate that members of his own party have lost confidence in him and have personally urged him to step down. He may do so before Wednesday, when a party meeting is scheduled.
The opposition has already called for new elections. The last Canadian federal election was held in September 2021.
