The bus accident in Norway on Thursday afternoon has resulted in a tragic outcome, with at least three fatalities and multiple individuals sustaining serious injuries. The incident took place in Hadsel, Nordland, when the bus veered off the road and plunged down a slope during poor weather conditions. It eventually overturned and partially submerged in a small lake, as reported by the Norwegian broadcaster NRK and various media outlets.
Requiring the assistance of three crane trucks and a mobile crane, rescue workers managed to extract the bus from the water despite harsh weather conditions, successfully completing the operation by 03:30 hours.
Authorities stated that the death toll may rise further, and the identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed. Among the passengers onboard were individuals from eight different nations, including Norway, India, China, Singapore, Malaysia, the Netherlands, France, and South Sudan.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated to local media outlet De Telegraaf that there is currently no official confirmation regarding the involvement of Dutch nationals in the accident. They have not received any requests for consular assistance thus far.
Following the accident, emergency services, including divers, swiftly responded to the scene. The bus was carrying 58 passengers, comprising both adults and children, including twenty individuals from China. The Lofoten islands, where the incident occurred, are renowned for observing the Northern Lights in winter. Presently, the region is characterized by slippery and dark conditions, with the bus originating from Narvik, Norway.
