Bulgaria and Romania Join Schengen Area Bringing the Total Number of Countries to 29
eu council - Bulgaria and Romania have officially become part of the Schengen area, allowing visa-free travel, following a decision by the EU Council. This decision, ratified on December 12, 2024, marks an important milestone for the two countries.
Bulgaria and Romania have today joined the Schengen area after a decision was made by the EU Council in December 2024. This move allows visa-free travel for citizens of both countries and signifies closer integration within the EU.
The process of Bulgaria and Romania joining the Schengen area had faced obstacles, with countries like the Netherlands, Hungary, and Austria initially voicing concerns. However, with Austria lifting its veto on grounds of migration and corruption, the path was cleared for the two countries to be included in the Schengen zone.
Romania and Bulgaria, both EU members since 2007, had been seeking to join the Schengen area for several years. The European Commission had expressed its support for their inclusion back in 2011, highlighting the benefits of enhanced cooperation and free movement within the EU.
