tel aviv - Hope for a breakthrough: Israel and Hamas nearing agreement on releasing hostages. Latest updates on the ongoing negotiations between the two parties.

Media reports from Saudi Arabia and Qatar suggest that most of the differences between Israel and Hamas have been resolved after recent talks. Both parties are on the verge of presenting an agreement, although Israeli media remains cautious, hinting at unresolved issues.

The main sticking point revolves around the number of hostages to be released in the initial phase of the agreement. Israel is aiming for 24 to 30 releases, including younger men whom Hamas considers to be soldiers. In response, Hamas has approved a list of 34 hostages put forth by Israel for a potential exchange with Palestinian prisoners.

Israel's priority is to secure the release of as many hostages as possible in the first phase, fearing that further releases may be uncertain. A permanent agreement seems distant as Hamas demands an end to the conflict and Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resists due to fears of his government collapsing.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, despite his criticism of Netanyahu, highlighted Hamas as the obstacle to a Gaza deal over the past year. He expressed surprise at the lack of international pressure on Hamas to make concessions.

Recent pressure from countries like Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, following warnings from former President Donald Trump, has increased the urgency of negotiations. Approximately a hundred Israelis remain in Gaza, with many feared deceased. A recent video of 19-year-old Liri Albag was released by Hamas, likely to pressure negotiations; Israel responded by hinting at a new offensive in Gaza.

During indirect talks, Israel is demanding a complete list of all living hostages from Hamas. The group requires a one-week ceasefire to compile the list, citing some hostages held by other factions. Israel may propose a temporary ceasefire in return for the list and releasing a few hostages.

With hostages enduring over 450 days of captivity in dire conditions and the Palestinian population enduring a year of conflict, time is of the essence in reaching a resolution.
