Brazilian Justice Prosecutes Former President Bolsonaro for Alleged Coup Plot
Brazilian Justice is prosecuting former President Jair Bolsonaro for an alleged coup plot involving a plan to poison his political rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and seize power. The maximum sentence for this charge is 43 years in prison.
Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet has accused Bolsonaro and others of attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law, staging a coup, and participating in a criminal organization. Bolsonaro is said to have led a "criminal organization and an authoritarian power project."
Other former ministers from Bolsonaro's administration, including the Minister of Justice Anderson Torres, have also been implicated in the alleged coup plot.
The plan to poison Lula and undermine the 2022 presidential elections reportedly involved spreading rumors of election fraud and casting doubt on the electoral system's integrity. The coup plotters aimed to declare the election results invalid if Lula won and to establish a state of emergency to seize control of the government.
The coup plot was uncovered when the police found documents detailing the scheme during a search at the residence of Augusto Heleno, Bolsonaro's Minister of Institutional Security. The documents outlined a plan to subvert the election results and take control of the government, drawing parallels to the military dictatorship of 1964-1985.
Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2023, has denied any wrongdoing and claimed he is the victim of a political witch hunt. Despite facing accusations of organizing a coup, he remains defiant and has not been detained.
While Bolsonaro is currently free pending trial, his former Minister of Defense Walter Braga Netto and several others are in custody for obstructing the investigation. Bolsonaro, who lost the 2022 presidential election by a narrow margin, remains a prominent figure in Brazilian politics despite being barred from running for office until 2030.
