The body of former American President Jimmy Carter has arrived in Washington for a state funeral on Thursday. Carter passed away on December 29 at the age of 100 in Georgia, where he lived.
Carter was flown to the capital in a presidential plane. He was then placed in a hearse to be transported to the Capitol. The final leg of the journey will be carried out by a horse-drawn carriage. People can pay their respects to the former president at the Capitol, just as thousands have already done in Atlanta in the past few days.
The funeral ceremony will take place at the National Cathedral on Thursday. President Joe Biden will deliver a speech, and it is expected that all four living former presidents (Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump) will be in attendance.
The day of the state funeral is a national day of mourning in the US. James Earl Carter Jr. was the 39th president of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981, representing the Democratic Party. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
