American President Joe Biden will award the 'Presidential Medal of Freedom', the highest civilian honor, to nineteen individuals from sectors such as politics, sports, fashion, and entertainment. Among them, Argentine football star Lionel Messi, rock musician Bono of U2, and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will be honored during a ceremony at the White House. Also included are fashion designer Ralph Lauren, basketball legend Earvin 'Magic' Johnson, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington, philanthropist George Soros, and British primatologist Jane Goodall (famous for her research on the lives of wild chimpanzees).
The 'Presidential Medal of Freedom' is awarded to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to American prosperity, values, or security, to world peace, or to other significant societal, public, or private interests.
While the award is intended to be impartial, it is not uncommon for political leanings to be evident in the selection of honorees. For instance, Hillary Clinton was the Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, but lost to Republican Donald Trump, who will be returning to the White House in a couple of weeks. Soros, on the other hand, is known for his support of liberal ideas and candidates and is viewed as a villain by some Republicans.
