Tragic Incident in Dentergem Care Home
In a shocking turn of events, a resident of Mariaburcht care home in Dentergem, Belgium, attacked three fellow residents, resulting in two fatalities and one resident fighting for her life.
The incident took place around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, according to Mayor Koenraad Degroote, who visited the scene after being informed by the police chief.
The victims, all in their nineties, were attacked by the resident for reasons that are currently unknown. The night staff discovered the attack, causing great distress. Victim support is on-site to assist both staff and residents.
Forensic experts are present at the care home, awaiting the arrival of the investigating judge. The community's thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
Martine Decraemer, whose mother resides in the care home, rushed to check on her after hearing about the incident. While her mother is unharmed, other families received devastating news.
The care home, part of the Curando group, offers 88 residential units and 10 short-stay rooms. Established in March 2023, the care home is highly regarded in the region.
Responding to the incident, Curando's Deputy Director Anneleen De Roo expressed deep concern for residents and families, ensuring additional staff are available to provide support. Nearby school activities continue as usual, with students kept away from the care home premises.
