Bear storms Japanese supermarket and injures employee, captured after two days
tokyo - A bear managed to evade capture in a supermarket for two days before being caught by Japanese police.
The Japanese police have successfully captured a bear that had been hiding in a supermarket for two days. Following the evacuation of the supermarket, the approximately 1-meter-long bear remained inside. According to the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, the animal took shelter in the meat department. Efforts by hunters and a drone to locate the animal were unsuccessful. The police stated that the bear had likely fled to the storage area.
Using a trap filled with apples and honey-coated bread, the police caught the bear on Monday morning. The animal will be euthanized, reported the Japanese news agency Kyodo.
Stray bears are becoming an increasing problem in Japan. Between April of last year and March of this year, six Japanese citizens died in bear attacks. This marked the highest death toll since records began in 2006.
