Starting from February 1st, anyone riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk in Barcelona risks facing a fine of 500 euros. The city, known for its increasing number of scooter riders in recent years, is adamant about keeping the sidewalk clear for pedestrians.
In addition, the popular tourist destination will mandate the use of helmets for electric scooter riders. Failure to wear a helmet could lead to a 100 euro fine. The maximum speed limit for electric scooters has been set at 25 kilometers per hour. Riders exceeding this limit will be subject to motor vehicle regulations and could face a 500 euro fine, according to information from a city official reported by El País.
Transporting more than one person on a scooter and allowing individuals under the age of 16 to operate them was already prohibited.
In the near future, cyclists in Barcelona will also be fined 500 euros if caught riding on the sidewalk. Exceptions will be made only for children under 12 accompanied by adults, minors under 14 in areas without bike lanes, and adults carrying a child in a seat on paths without bike lanes.
