albufeira, portugal - Albufeira in Portugal introduces new rules against 'indecent' tourists to protect families and shed party image.
Albufeira Takes Action Against Indecent Tourists
In response to a group of Britons jumping naked on a bar, Albufeira authorities are cracking down on tourists in beachwear to protect young families and the city's reputation. Similar measures have been seen in popular destinations like Barcelona, Venice, and the Maldives.
Many German, British, and Dutch tourists flock to the sunny Algarve region annually, often dressed in bikinis and swim trunks. The new regulations, pending local approval, are set to take effect before summer. Violators risk fines of up to 1500 euros for wearing beach attire in the city, engaging in sexual acts, public intoxication, or urinating in public.
The southern region of Portugal, particularly the Algarve where the city of Faro is located, is a popular holiday destination. Last year, over five million tourists visited the Mediterranean area, while the population is less than half a million. Portugal also attracts Dutch expatriates.
In cities like Doha, Qatar, and Bangkok, Thailand, beachgoers are advised to cover up after leaving the beach, especially near religious or sacred sites. In Cambodia, a Dutch tourist was arrested along with two others for taking photos of their naked bottoms at the Angkor temple.
