vilnius - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania disconnect from Russian energy system, transitioning to Europe's grid after years of preparations.
Baltic States Transition to European Power Grid
Lithuania became the first Baltic state to disconnect from the Russian power grid before 06:30 (Dutch time) on Saturday morning. The decision to disconnect from the Russian energy system was made in 2023, ending a long-standing cooperation dating back to the Soviet era.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Baltic states stopped importing electricity from Russia, but remained connected to the Russian grid due to an old contract. This dependency on Russia for grid stability will now come to an end as the countries switch to their own power networks. Starting from Sunday, they will be integrated into the European power system.
The Baltic states have been making preparations for years to transition their energy networks from the Russian to the European system, ensuring greater energy security and independence.
