Baltic Countries Cut Ties with Russia
In a historic move, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia have disconnected from the Russian power grid and joined the European electricity network. The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized the significance of this action, stating that it marks the end of threats and blackmail from Russia. The decision to separate from the Russian grid gained momentum after Russia's invasion of Crimea in 2014. The disconnection of the power grid link, which was the last remaining connection to Russia for the three countries, also means that Kaliningrad, an exclave of Russia located between Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic Sea coast, will have to operate its electricity system independently. To ensure a smooth connection to the European system, the Baltic countries have invested 1.6 billion Euros since 2018.
