Australian woman, Donna Nelson, has been sentenced to six years in Japan for smuggling two kilograms of methamphetamine into the country. Despite claiming innocence, Nelson was found guilty of drug smuggling after the narcotics were discovered hidden in a fake bottom of her suitcase.
Nelson, a 58-year-old grandmother, maintained that she was unaware of the drugs in her luggage. She claimed that a Nigerian man she met online in 2020 had asked her to carry a suitcase to her online lover in Japan. However, upon her arrival, the mysterious man was nowhere to be found. The prosecution believed that Nelson was a victim of romance fraud but argued that she was aware of the drugs in the suitcase.
The Japanese prosecutor's office alleged that translation errors led to misunderstandings and an unjust claim for ten years in prison and a fine of $30,000. Nelson's lawyer insisted that she had no knowledge of the drugs. Despite her daughter's testimonial in court describing her as a good person who came to Japan for love, Nelson was sentenced to six years in prison.
