At least two people have died and dozens are injured following an accident with a Spanish bus in the south-west of France. The incident occurred around 5 pm on a mountain road near Andorra, in the ski resort of Porté-Puymorens. Video footage released by the authorities shows the bus crossing the road and colliding with a cliff on the driver's side. A large section of the vehicle was torn off by the impact with the rock wall.
"It was a bus from Andorra on the RN320, coming from the Puymorens pass. The bus violently collided with the left side of the road, came to a stop, and the impact was severe," said prefect Didier Carponcin.
The bus was carrying 47 people including the driver, with predominantly Spanish and Colombian nationals among the passengers. At least two of them lost their lives and dozens were injured. Among the injured is a four-year-old child, fortunately not in critical condition.
The mayor of Porté-Puymorens, Jean-Philippe Augé, explained to BFM TV that the passengers on the bus had left Barcelona on Sunday morning for an excursion to Pas de la Case, a city in Andorra known for its affordable shopping. The accident occurred as the bus was returning to Barcelona, he added.
Nearly 200 French firefighters responded to the scene, supported by Catalan and Andorran firefighters who had arrived to assist in this border area. The injured were taken to hospitals in Toulouse, Perpignan, Foix, and Puigcerda.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
