istanbul, turkey - At least 37 people have lost their lives in Istanbul, Turkey in the past six weeks after consuming fake alcohol, according to the governor's office.

At least 37 individuals in Istanbul have tragically passed away in the span of six weeks after consuming fake alcohol, with 77 others suffering from poisoning. The governor's office revealed that 17 individuals are currently undergoing treatment for consuming counterfeit alcohol, as stated on social media.

Authorities have apprehended fourteen suspects accused of distributing the illicit alcohol in the market.

Incidents of poisoning due to fake alcohol are common in Turkey, with the illegal production surging as a result of increased taxes on alcoholic beverages.

Raki, the national alcoholic drink, is priced around 1,300 Turkish lira (35 euros) per liter at supermarkets, while the country's minimum wage stands at a maximum of 17,000 lira (465 euros).
