Asian countries welcomed the year 2025 with mesmerizing fireworks and light shows. Kiribati, an island republic, was the first to ring in the new year. However, the wave of celebrations is moving steadily westwards!
In Beijing, festivities took place in a former steel factory on the western edge of the city, while in Shanghai, crowds gathered to admire light shows along the river promenade and other locations. New Year's Eve is not celebrated as grandly in China as in other places. The Chinese New Year, based on the lunar calendar, is considered more significant.
In Japan, the new year was welcomed with the ringing of bells in the many shrines and temples that the country is rich in. In Tokyo, many gathered at the grand Senso-ji temple to celebrate the new year together.
In the Thai capital of Bangkok, one of the best ways to watch the show was from a party boat on the Chao Phraya River. Thailand, following the Buddhist calendar, began the year 2568.
In Singapore, hordes of spectators gathered to watch the fireworks at Marina Bay, overlooking the skyline.
Earlier, there were spectacular fireworks shows in Australia and New Zealand. Large groups of people flocked to Sydney Harbour for the traditional fireworks around the Opera House.
However, it was Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean that was the first country in the world to ring in the new year. The republic is thirteen hours ahead of the Netherlands.
