Arrest Warrant for Evo Morales
A judge in Bolivia has issued an arrest warrant for former president Evo Morales, freezing his accounts and prohibiting him from leaving the country. Morales faces formal charges of human trafficking, with allegations that the parents of a minor girl reportedly offered her to Morales in exchange for political favors. Morales is accused of having a relationship with the girl and fathering a child with her in 2016.
Morales has dismissed the charges as politically motivated, claiming that his accusers aim to banish him and eliminate his chances in the upcoming presidential elections in Bolivia. The elections are scheduled for August 17th in the South American country.
Morales was forced to resign in 2019 after more than a decade in power. Despite legal restrictions on seeking a third term, he aims to secure the nomination of his leftist party MAS for this year's elections.
