Arrest of Journalist Cecilia Sala in Tehran Places Italy in Difficult Position Between US and Ayatollahs
tehran, iran - Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been detained in Iran since December 19, possibly as a bargaining chip for an Iranian man arrested in Milan. The situation highlights the delicate balance Italy faces between the US and Iran.
Italian journalist Cecilia Sala arrived in Iran on December 12 with a valid journalist visa. Despite not conducting any interviews that could be offensive to the regime, she has been in solitary confinement in Evin Prison in Tehran for almost two weeks.
Evin Prison typically houses dissidents and foreigners suspected of having ties to opposition groups against the theocratic regime.
Italian authorities strongly believe Sala was only detained because Iran wants to exchange her for an Iranian man recently arrested in Milan at the request of the US.
Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, a 38-year-old technician with Iranian and Swiss nationality, is accused by the US of smuggling electronic materials from the US to Iran, violating export sanctions. Abedini is suspected of aiding Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in a drone attack in Jordan where three US soldiers died.
Abedini's arrest in Milan took place on December 16, where he was found in possession of incriminating electronic materials. He is currently in custody pending extradition to the US.
Italy is working to secure Sala's release, with the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, describing the situation as delicate and challenging.
Meanwhile, Abedini's lawyer has requested house arrest for his client, stating there is no risk of flight. Granting this request could potentially facilitate negotiations for Sala's release.
The US condemns Sala's detention and demands her immediate release while maintaining their request for Abedini's extradition.
