antarctica - South African researchers on Antarctica request evacuation following alleged threats and sexual abuse, amid extreme conditions.
Antarctica Scientists Seek Evacuation
A group of South African scientists on Antarctica seeks evacuation after a team member made threats and allegedly sexually abused a colleague.
The email was sent last week by one of the researchers. The scientist mentioned was accused of attacking someone, threatening colleagues with death, and sexually abusing a fellow researcher.
The team lives in fear of the individual posing a threat to the entire group. Dion George, South Africa's Minister of Environment, will personally meet with the research team to assess the situation.
Living on Antarctica is challenging. Extreme weather and -23 degrees temperatures make it safer to remain at the research station, creating a sense of isolation among team members. Researchers undergo a rigorous psychological evaluation to determine their suitability for the mentally demanding environment.
