An American from California has won the fifth largest jackpot ever in the Mega Millions lottery. They purchased a lottery ticket worth 1.22 billion dollars (1.17 billion euros). The ticket was sold in Shasta County in Cottonwood and had all six numbers correct.
The winning numbers were 3, 7, 37, 49, and 55 with the gold Mega ball 6. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350 according to Mega Millions.
In the past 30 drawings, no one had all the correct numbers, leading to the prize pool growing. It eventually reached 1.22 billion dollars.
However, there is a slim chance that the winner will actually receive the massive amount in their account. Mega Millions winners must make a choice. They can either opt to receive a smaller amount annually, accruing the full jackpot after 30 years. Or they can choose a one-time payout.
Most winners opt for the latter. The downside is that the amount is significantly lower. In this case, it will be around 549.7 million dollars (527 million euros).
