Fred Bandy Jr., a 69-year-old man from Indiana, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a teenage girl in 1975. Laurel Jean Mitchell, a 17-year-old girl, was last seen leaving the restaurant where she worked in North Webster, Indiana on August 6, 1975. Her body was found the next morning in a river 24 kilometers away, and it was determined that she had been sexually assaulted. Nearly half a century later, two suspects were arrested in the case based on new DNA evidence found on the victim's clothing. John Wayne Lehman, a co-defendant in the case, received an eight-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit murder. According to Lehman, Bandy raped and drowned the victim, but he denied participating in the assault. He claimed he was afraid to stop Bandy. Investigators believe Bandy drove Laurel to the river and forcibly drowned her. Fred Bandy Jr. was convicted of the murder of Laurel Jean Mitchell and sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.
