The American state of Alabama has once again executed a death row inmate using nitrogen gas. 49-year-old Carey Grayson was convicted of the murder of a hitchhiker in 1994. He and three other teenagers picked up the woman, beat her to death, mutilated her body, and inflicted 180 stab wounds. Her fingers were severed, and a lung was removed. Grayson, who was 19 at the time, was sentenced to death, while his minor accomplices received life imprisonment.
In a nitrogen gas execution, the condemned inmate wears a mask that fills with nitrogen. They are supposed to lose consciousness within seconds. Witnesses of Grayson's execution reported that he shook his head vigorously as the gas filled the mask. He appeared to struggle for several minutes before being pronounced dead. Grayson had chosen the nitrogen gas method for his execution. Alabama also executes individuals through lethal injection.
In January, Alabama carried out its first nitrogen gas execution after the US Supreme Court authorized the use of this method.
