Airfryers Found to Spy on Users in the UK
uk - A recent investigation revealed that 'smart' airfryers sold in the UK have been requesting permission to listen in on users' conversations through a mobile app.
An organization analyzed three 'smart' airfryers being sold in the UK and found that they were requesting permission to eavesdrop on users. The analysis evaluated the airfryers based on categories such as permission, transparency, data security, data minimization, trackers, and data deletion.
All three products - Aigostar, Xiaomi Mi Smart, and Cosori CAF-LI401S - were found to be aware of their customers' exact locations and were asking for permission to record audio on the user's phone. One of them was linked to trackers from companies like Facebook and TikTok, while another wanted to know the user's gender and birthdate. Both the Aigostar and Xiaomi airfryers were found to be sending personal data to servers in China without specifying this in their privacy policy.
Harry Rose, editor of Which? magazine, commented on the investigation, stating that it reveals how manufacturers of smart technology and their partners are currently collecting consumer data seemingly recklessly and often with little to no transparency. The investigation was prompted by various alarming stories related to airfryers, including an increase in the number of fires caused by them, with the Ministry of Interior not accurately recording the data.
