Cardinals Gather in Rome After Pope Francis' Death
Cardinals from around the world are convening in Rome to discuss the next steps following the passing of Pope Francis. The period between the pope's death and the election of a new pope is known as "sede vacante" (vacant seat).
Funeral Arrangements
The pontiff's body is currently at the Domus Sanctae Martha chapel within the Vatican, where cardinals pay their respects. On Wednesday at 9:00 AM, the casket will be transferred to St. Peter's Basilica for public viewing until Friday evening.
Funeral and Burial
Pope Francis will be laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore as per his wishes for a simple burial. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 AM. Following his burial, nine days of mourning, known as novendiali, will take place.
Conclave and Election of New Pope
Cardinals will deliberate on the qualities expected in the next pope before entering the conclave to elect a new pontiff. The conclave will commence between the 15th and 20th day after the pope's death, between May 6 and May 10.
