The US Department of Justice has filed charges against an Afghan citizen, N. Tawhedi, who allegedly planned a terrorist attack on the election day in the United States in the name of ISIS. The 27-year-old man was arrested by the FBI in Oklahoma City on Monday. He appeared in federal court for the first time on Tuesday, where the charges against him were made public.

Tawhedi is accused of conspiracy and attempting to provide material support to ISIS, which could result in a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. He is also charged with accepting a firearm to commit a felony, which could lead to a maximum prison sentence of 15 years upon conviction.

The Afghan man, along with his minor brother-in-law, are believed to be ISIS supporters who took steps to carry out an attack. They tried to sell their family home, moved their families abroad, and purchased weapons and ammunition. "Their ultimate goal was to organize a violent attack in the United States in the name of ISIS," the prosecutors said.

The FBI found evidence that Tawhedi had viewed ISIS propaganda. The 27-year-old also contributed to a charity organization that "uses ISIS as a front and funnels money to ISIS." Tawhedi was reportedly seeking access to surveillance and security cameras in Washington DC and monitoring webcams showing the White House and the Washington Monument. In a Telegram message, he informed an individual associated with terrorist activities that he had purchased two Kalashnikovs and ordered 500 bullets, as reported by CBS News.
