Activists in Rome Sabotage Airbnb Key Safes in Robin Hood Style
rome - An activist group in Rome has taken drastic measures against the tourism influx by sabotaging Airbnb key safes across the city.
The group is opposing the massive influx of tourists in the city, which is expected to reach up to 35 million people by the year 2025. They are also against the way people are profiting from these tourists at the expense of others.
"Housing is a right, not a golden goose. Rents are getting more expensive, and the number of tenants being evicted due to increased prices has become enormous," the activists stated. "Let's turn the Jubilee year into a year of jubilation for the poor, instead of the rich."
The activists have targeted key safes owned by Airbnb hosts, where tourists can access keys with pin codes to enter without the need for staff. They use glue and other materials to render the key safes unusable and replace them with an image of Robin Hood's iconic green feathered hat. "We are sabotaging the unjust society," they explain. "The key safes are a symptom of an out-of-control tourism business model."
In just the popular and charming Trastevere district alone, the group has made around eighty key safes unusable. "This neighborhood is the most depopulated. The population has decreased by 45% over the past ten years. The tourism sector has turned the neighborhood into an amusement park, forcing the less affluent residents to leave," the activists describe.
They have also carried out similar actions in other neighborhoods such as San Lorenzo and the city center. Apart from the Airbnb hosts, even the tourists who hoped to save money on their stay in Rome through Airbnb are not pleased with the actions.
