Gunba Wins Abkhazia's Self-Proclaimed President Election
The self-proclaimed presidential election in Abkhazia, a region that unilaterally declared independence from Georgia and is supported by Russia, was won by Badra Gunba. The Central Election Commission of the so-called Abkhaz Republic announced that Gunba received 54.73% of the votes, defeating his opponent Adgur Ardzinba.
Abkhazia's self-proclaimed President Aslan Bjania resigned in November 2024 due to political disputes, leading to the election. Georgia's Foreign Ministry condemned the so-called election, stating that it violates Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The region has been under Russian occupation since the 2008 South Ossetia War, during which Abkhazia and South Ossetia unilaterally declared independence from Georgia, a move recognized by Russia but condemned by Georgia.
