thessaloniki, greece - A 2,000-year-old Greek statue was discovered abandoned near trash bins in Thessaloniki, sparking investigations by local authorities.
Discovery of Ancient Statue
A Greek man found a statue in Thessaloniki that was believed to be around 2,000 years old, left near garbage bins. The local police are conducting an investigation after the man reported finding the statue near waste containers.
Initial assessments by the archeological department suggest that the marble statue dates back to the Hellenistic period, between 323 and 30 BC. Measuring approximately 80 centimeters in height, the statue is missing its arms and head. Further examinations will be carried out by a research team in northern Greece to identify the statue, a process anticipated to take some time.
Instances of illegal antiquities trading have been a concern in Greece, with new discoveries from ancient times often unearthed during roadworks and construction projects. Notably, the construction of a new metro system in Thessaloniki was delayed for twenty years due to the discovery of a Greek cemetery, finally opening in November 2024. In a similar vein, a Roman statue of Hermes was unearthed in Athens in December during gas pipeline construction near the Acropolis.
