tasmania, australia - Approximately 136 of the stranded orcas still alive as experts work to save them in Tasmania.

Mass Stranding of Orcas in Tasmania

157 orcas have stranded in Tasmania, with around 136 still alive, sparking a massive rescue effort by marine biologists, veterinarians, and volunteers. The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) has called it the largest stranding event in fifty years on the island.

Due to the remote location of the beach, getting the necessary specialized equipment in time is proving to be a challenge, according to experts.

The cause of the stranding remains unclear, with mass strandings being a common occurrence in Australia and New Zealand, often involving pilot whales.
