At least 16 people have lost their lives in floods and landslides on Java Island, Indonesia.

Persistent heavy rains have caused floods, mudslides, and landslides in four different districts in the province of North Sumatra. The incidents resulted in multiple casualties.

At least nine people have been killed as Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano erupted on the Indonesian island of Flores on Sunday night. The victims died as their homes collapsed, according to a local official. Seven villages have been affected by the eruption, with local authorities initiating evacuations.

A New Zealand pilot, Phillip Mehrtens, who was abducted by Papuan separatists in early 2023 has been released and taken to a hospital in Timika for medical check-up.
